Sunita Acharya is an environmental enthusiast currently pursuing her BSc degree in Agriculture at IAAS Paklihawa. Her passion for connecting with nature and contributing to sustainable food production has driven her to pursue this degree. Additionally, she is currently serving as the Vice President of Sustainability Week at IAAS Paklihawa, and she enjoys engaging in various research projects related to agriculture and connecting with farmers from different communities. OMLAS has been her mentor since last year. OMLAS Project: Banana Fiber Extraction The Banana Fiber Project is a sustainable initiative aimed at utilizing banana fibers to create various handicrafts and products while empowering local communities.
The project will mainly experiment with different techniques and designs to create a range of products using banana fibers, including paper, rope, bags, and handicrafts. Through collaboration with women's groups and training workshops, the project not only repurposes waste but also empowers marginalized women with valuable skills and employment opportunities. The project embodies the fusion of creativity, environmental stewardship, and economic empowerment, contributing to a brighter future for both humans and the planet. Targeted SDGs are Goal 1: No poverty, Goal 3: Good health & well-being, Goal 8: Decent work and economic growth, Goal 12: Responsible consumption & production, and Goal 13: Climate action.
