Wentan Gao is a bachelor student pursuing sustainability in the environmental science field, with data analysis skills helping tackle environmental issues, and aiming at further study and research on sustainability issues.
She is working on a sustainable water usage project, planted in Mexico City and projected to be implemented in the Philippines. Recognizing how the traditional method of piping groundwater diverts water usage from sustainable systems, she and her team invented a filter and collection system for rainwater on housing units. This system is accessible to underserved groups while also promoting community engagement and building a strong bond between knowledge and people on the ground. Wentan believes the technical aspect is universal and transferable across fields, but emphasizes that the key lies with the local people. For the upcoming on-the-ground project in the Philippines, she hopes to connect with local communities and learn from them.
OMLAS Experience: “I have enjoyed interactive meeting with all omlas fellows and speakers, that hearing from fellows holding similar passion in sustainability who work in distinctive demographic regions and specification.”
